Amir Mukambetov (he/they)

Amir Mukambetov is a Human Rights Defender and queer activist from Kyrgyzstan. Currently, he/they serve as Chair of the Board of the LGBT+ organization Kyrgyz Indigo.  

Amir is an expert on gender, sexuality, human rights, religion and HIV prevention in the Central Asian region. During his/their activism, he/they have contributed significantly to increasing the visibility of the queer community, building the LGBT+ movement and enhancing the capacity of the queer community in the country.  

In 2014, when the anti-gay propaganda bill was initiated by members of the Kyrgyzstani Parliament, Amir actively participated in the creation of a group that opposed the passage of the bill. He/they, together with other activists, initiated the creation of the LGBT+ Platform of Kyrgyzstan and the LGBT+ Platform of Central Asia.  

Amir proud graduate of SOAS University of London with MA Degree in Gender Studies. He/they also alumnus of Chevening, which is the UK government’s international scholarship programme.
