Andrew Barr is the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).  He is the first openly gay politician to lead an Australian state or territory.

The ACT has a long history of inclusive LGBTIQ+ law reform.  It was the first Australian jurisdiction to introduce a Human Rights Act and the first to legally recognise same-sex couples. The Territory has also introduced fairer birth certificate laws for trans and gender diverse individuals, removed direct discrimination for couples seeking to start a family, introduced protections from discrimination for intersex people, and recorded the highest YES vote in the Australian Marriage Equality vote in 2017.
