Doris Fish: Queen of Queens
Sun Feb 26 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Sun Feb 26 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
A special event celebrating the life of Doris Fish, featuring the launch of Who Does That Bitch Think She Is? and a conversation with author, Craig Seligman, and a screening of Hi Spots in a Low Dive: The Home Movies of Doris Fish, presented by Doris’s friend and director, Phillip R. Ford.
In the 1970s, queer people were openly despised, drag queens scared the public, and that was the era when Doris Fish (born Philip Mills in 1952) painted and padded his way to stardom. He was a leader of the generation that prepared the world not just for drag queens on TV but for a society that is more tolerant and accepting of LGBTQIA+ people. How did we get from there to here? In Who Does That Bitch Think She Is? Craig Seligman looks at Doris’s life as a way to provide some answers.
Director of the cult film classic Vegas in Space (1991), Phillip R. Ford served most of the 1980s as “honorary straight man” in the legendary San Francisco drag troupe Sluts A-Go-Go. Collaborating with Doris Fish, Miss X and “Tippi”, he created many still lovingly remembered drag shows. In Hi Spots in a Low Dive: The Home Movies of Doris Fish he presents a selection from his extensive “home movie” collection, with behind-the-scenes glimpses, stories, reminiscences, and a fabulous assortment of hits from 1980s San Francisco, including clips from Nightclub of the Living Dead, The Happy Hour Show, Bad Seed, Gay Cable Network, The Sluts A-Go-Go All Star Gang Bang and Who Does That Bitch Think She Is?
