Tony Galluzzo Wrestling Tournament

The Sydney Silverbacks Wrestling Club are hosting the WorldPride edition of our annual olympic freestyle wrestling tournament and seminar: The Tony Galluzzo Wrestling Tournament.  This tournament is normally held in the Mardi Gras period.

The tournament is named after Tony Galluzzo who refounded the club in 2009 after several years of inactivity and was president of the club from 2009 to 2018. The club was originally founded in 1993 by Barry Webb.

We welcome LGBTIQ+ and allied wrestlers from around the world. Competitors will need to be aged 18 and over, however we welcome spectators of all ages.  This event is open to all skill levels, and this will be one of the considerations taken into account when pairings are determined. 

The goal of Olympic Freestyle wrestling is to pin your opponent’s shoulder on the ground or winning by points built up through technical moves performed in control of your opponent.  If you can pin your opponent or gain a 10-point lead, then the match will be called on the spot.  Otherwise the wrestler that is ahead on points will win at the end of the 6 minute match.

We focus on the safety and wellbeing of anyone who steps onto the wrestling mat, those people that are volunteering and of course our spectators.
