Matthew Phillips (he/him)

Matthew is a strategist and communicator with over ten years’ experience in media relations, digital campaigning, political relations and policy engagement. Prior to joining Equality Australia, Matthew was the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the Lord Mayor at the City of Sydney, Clover Moore. He has held senior roles in the humanitarian and human rights sectors, including Oxfam Australia.   

Matthew was the co-director of GetUp’s Human Rights campaign team, playing a key role in delivering the ‘No Business in Abuse’ campaign, which targeted corporate involvement in mandatory detention of asylum seekers, #LetThemStay, which prevented the deportation to Nauru of hundreds of asylum seekers currently in Australia, and the #BringThemHere campaign, which called on the Australian Government to empty the camps on Manus Island and Nauru, and bring the people held there to safety in Australia.
